Ratu Tevita Waranaivalu has dedicated his 2024 Footballer of the Year award to his late grandfather, Simione Mototabua, who passed away just a week prior at the age of 80. The Fiji national representative in futsal, beach soccer, and full-code football shared his emotional experience during the award ceremony held in Nadi.

In a heartfelt tribute, Waranaivalu expressed his gratitude for his grandfather’s unwavering support and motivation throughout his life. “He always encouraged me to give my best in everything I do and to remain humble and disciplined,” he stated, reflecting on the strong influence his grandfather had on his personal and athletic journey.

Waranaivalu, a 29-year-old athlete from Vugalei, Tailevu, won the award over noteworthy competitors including Thomas Dunn from Navua and Merrill Nand from Suva. He wished his grandfather could have witnessed him receiving this prestigious recognition, but he finds comfort in believing that Mototabua would be proud and watching over him.

This touching story serves as a reminder that the bonds we share with our loved ones can provide strength and motivation, even in times of loss. Waranaivalu’s achievement not only highlights his talent and hard work but also emphasizes the importance of family support in pursuing one’s dreams.

In a world where sports often seem highly competitive and focused on individual success, Waranaivalu’s dedication to his grandfather reflects a deeper narrative of gratitude and legacy—showing that the true spirit of sportsmanship extends beyond mere accolades.
