Concerns about food safety and restaurant standards significantly impact consumer choices in the Suva to Nausori corridor. A recent survey of 20 individuals from various backgrounds sought to delve into what drives their decisions when dining out, focusing on factors like restaurant variety, satisfaction levels, past negative experiences, and value for money.
Findings indicated that nearly all participants prioritize receiving good value for their money, though many expressed dissatisfaction due to inconsistent food quality and hygiene issues. Aarti Mala, a library manager, voiced her frustration, noting, “I hardly get my money’s worth… Daily items are getting expensive,” highlighting the rising costs affecting consumers.
Interestingly, despite inflation, many individuals reported eating out almost daily, especially for lunch, reflecting a trend among working professionals. However, this doesn’t lessen their discernment; factors such as menu options, quality over quantity, and cleanliness are key in their restaurant selection.
Akanisi Hali, a 24-year-old civil servant, emphasized the importance of food quality for health reasons, stating, “Quality matters, especially if we’re trying to stay healthy.” Another respondent explained their habit of inspecting the food preparation area before making a purchase to ensure cleanliness.
Food safety concerns are prevalent among consumers. Some individuals recounted adverse dining experiences, like returning meals due to staff neglecting food safety gear or serving substandard food. In fact, twenty percent of respondents had returned unsatisfactory meals, with one considering a formal complaint only as a last resort.
Seema Shandil, the CEO of the Consumer Council of Fiji, noted that the council receives complaints about food safety, with common issues being poor hygiene practices and subpar food quality. Over the last six months, the council documented 26 cases totaling $276.35, with over 341 complaints filed in 2023 worth $22,177.98.
The council conducts regular inspections and collaborates with health authorities to ensure establishments comply with health regulations. They are proactive in addressing non-compliance, issuing warnings and facilitating corrective actions.
Despite some challenges, the motivation for consumers and businesses to uphold food safety standards is clear. The Consumer Council remains dedicated to advocating for consumer safety, urging establishments to review and improve their practices constantly.
The Ministry of Health plays an essential role in enforcing compliance with food safety standards. Reports indicate that this year, 11 establishments were prosecuted for violations, underscoring the importance of adherence to regulations aimed at protecting public health.
In conclusion, while there are notable concerns regarding food quality and safety, the continued dialogue between consumers, businesses, and regulatory authorities highlights a collective effort toward ensuring better dining experiences.
