The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, has reported that food rations are being distributed today to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. Dedicated teams are on the ground to ensure that these essential supplies reach those in need, particularly in Nadi where distribution efforts are concentrated at various locations including Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.

Lewaqai specified that food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours post-evacuation. Currently, preparations for the food packages for the affected families are underway, with the goal of completing distribution today. In addition to food relief, teams are also assessing the situation by inspecting homes and evaluating residual water levels.

Despite the sunny conditions in the Western Division at the moment, Lewaqai noted that the Fiji Meteorological Services has cautioned that rain may return shortly due to an impending band of clouds. He advised the public to wear protective gear, particularly sturdy shoes, while cleaning their homes and to seek assistance from health officials when needed. This is particularly important as cleanup efforts may be crucial to avoid health risks following the disaster.

Emergency operations will continue as rainfall is predicted to persist throughout the weekend. Lewaqai assured that all relevant agencies have been informed about initial damage assessments, and future efforts will focus on thoroughly evaluating community needs to determine the necessary support.

This proactive approach by local authorities in distributing food and conducting assessments showcases the resilience of the community as they navigate through challenging times. The emphasis on safety and preparedness reflects a commitment to not only providing immediate assistance but also setting the stage for a stronger recovery in the days ahead.
