Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, reported that today’s primary task involves the distribution of food rations to 61 families housed in evacuation centres. These efforts are concentrated in the Nadi region, specifically targeting locations such as Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.
Lewaqai explained that according to operational guidelines, food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours following their evacuation. Currently, teams are preparing the food packages with the intention of completing distribution today.
In addition to food distribution, Lewaqai mentioned that assessment teams are actively surveying the situation, focusing on checking homes and the levels of residual water in the area. Despite the sunny weather being experienced in the Western Division, he warned that rain is expected later, as predicted by the Fiji Meteorological Services, due to a band of clouds that will affect the region over the next few days.
The Commissioner urged the public to take precautionary measures, such as wearing sturdy shoes while cleaning up their homes, as advised by the Ministry of Health. He encouraged individuals to seek guidance from health officials, particularly from the public health sector, to ensure their safety during cleanup operations.
Emergency operation centres will remain operational, prepared for the anticipated rainfall throughout the weekend. Lewaqai confirmed that all relevant agencies have been briefed about the initial damage assessments, with a focus on a comprehensive evaluation to determine the assistance needed by affected communities post-disaster.
This proactive approach highlights the resilience and community spirit in the face of adversity. By ensuring the swift distribution of food and encouraging safety measures, the Western Division aims to support its residents through this challenging time, fostering hope for recovery and rebuilding.
In summary, the efforts of the Divisional Commissioner and local teams show a strong commitment to the welfare of evacuees and the overall community as they navigate the aftermath of recent events.
