The Divisional Commissioner of the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, has announced that today marks a crucial effort in delivering food rations to 61 families currently housed in evacuation centers. These families, affected by recent adverse weather conditions, are receiving assistance primarily in Nadi, with distribution taking place at locations including Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.

According to Lewaqai, food rations are provided following a guideline that mandates support to evacuees 48 hours post-evacuation. His teams are actively preparing the necessary food packages with the goal of completing distribution within the day.

In addition to food aid, Lewaqai highlighted the importance of ongoing assessments where teams are evaluating household conditions and residual water levels remaining from the recent weather events. While the Western Division enjoys sunny skies today, forecasts from the Fiji Meteorological Services suggest that rain may return soon due to lingering cloud cover across the region.

He emphasized the importance of safety during cleanup efforts, urging the public to wear protective gear, especially sturdy shoes, while carrying out cleanups in their homes. The Ministry of Health is on hand to provide guidance and support, particularly from the public health sector, and Lewaqai encourages residents to utilize the favorable weather conditions for clean-up activities while remaining cautious.

Emergency operations centers will continue to operate as rainfall is predicted for the weekend, and all relevant agencies have been informed regarding the initial damage assessments. Lewaqai assured that a thorough evaluation will follow to effectively address the needs of affected communities.

This coordinated response reflects the commitment of local authorities to support families in need and ensure safety during recovery. It’s a reminder of the strength of community spirit as individuals come together during challenging times.

In summary, the Western Division is actively supporting evacuees with food rations and safety assessments, preparing for upcoming rain while encouraging community engagement in clean-up efforts.
