The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, announced that efforts are underway to distribute food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. These distributions are taking place in Nadi, at locations including Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.
According to Lewaqai, the procedure dictates that food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours after they have been evacuated. Distribution teams are working diligently to have the food packages ready and aim to complete their task today.
In addition to food distribution, teams are also assessing the aftermath of the recent disaster, checking on homes and monitoring residual water levels in affected areas. While the weather in the Western Division is sunny at the moment, Lewaqai warned that the Fiji Meteorological Services have predicted rainfall due to a persistent band of clouds over the country for the coming days.
Lewaqai urged residents to prioritize safety while cleaning up their properties, encouraging the use of protective gear such as sturdy shoes. He also recommended that people seek assistance from Ministry of Health staff, who are present to provide public health support.
Emergency operations centers will continue to function actively as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist into the weekend. Lewaqai emphasized that all relevant agencies have been briefed on the initial damage assessments, and comprehensive evaluations will be conducted to ascertain the level of assistance needed by communities affected by the disaster.
Overall, the ongoing efforts highlight a community mobilizing together to recover from challenging circumstances, with local authorities working tirelessly to ensure the well-being of affected families. This proactive approach reflects the resilience and commitment of the local government and agencies to support their communities during difficult times.
