The Health Ministry has expressed significant concerns regarding the high rate of non-compliance in the food industry. Health officials report that many food businesses, including street vendors, are operating without the appropriate licenses. Some possess incorrect licenses, and others lack any registration entirely due to confusion about the licensing process.

Asena Wati, the Health Inspector for the Cakaudrove Sub-division, emphasized that many operators are not aware of the legal requirements for registering their businesses. She noted, “Applicants are facing challenges with registration, including providing the wrong license ID and difficulties for those from rural areas who are unable to register online. Without proper registration, we cannot proceed with licensing.”

Wati indicated that the challenges presented by the online application system might contribute to the problem. She warned that the current state of non-compliance poses a significant risk to public health.

In a hopeful turn, Wati highlighted the rising interest in establishing food businesses in Vanua Levu, attributing this trend to an expanding economy and ongoing awareness campaigns. Although many of these businesses are already operational, they remain unclear about the registration and licensing processes.

This issue is part of a broader trend in Fiji, where recent enforcement actions have focused on ensuring that food operators comply with health regulations. For instance, similar initiatives from local councils aim to educate food business operators on standards required by the Fiji Food Safety Act 2003 and its associated regulations. Engaging the community in these efforts is vital as it supports the push for safer food services.

The ongoing commitment to public health and safety reflects a united effort by health authorities and community stakeholders to raise awareness, improve compliance, and ultimately enhance the overall dining experience in Fiji. With continued engagement and education, the hope is that these measures will foster a healthier environment for all consumers.
