A total of 61 families in the Western Division who had to seek refuge in evacuation centers were provided with food rations yesterday. Apolosi Lewaqai, the Commissioner for the Western Division, highlighted that the distribution effort aimed to support families in Nadi, particularly those taking shelter at Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group office.

Mr. Lewaqai explained that, according to the established guidelines, food rations are provided to evacuees 48 hours post-evacuation. He mentioned that teams were currently preparing the food packages for these families, with the intention to complete the distribution by the end of the day.

In addition to food provisions, teams are conducting assessments of homes and the overall situation in the affected areas. Despite the current sunny weather in the Western Division, the Fiji Meteorological Service has warned that rain is expected in the coming days due to lingering cloud cover.

Mr. Lewaqai assured that all relevant agencies have been briefed on the preliminary damages assessed, and there will be further comprehensive evaluations following the disaster to determine the level of assistance needed by the impacted communities.

This proactive approach reflects a strong commitment to supporting the affected families during challenging times, and the ongoing assessments will ensure that aid is efficiently targeted where it is needed most. With the community’s resilience and collaborative efforts, there is hope for a swift recovery from this situation.

This article underscores the importance of timely support and the collaboration among various agencies to help communities during crises.
