FNU’s Vision for Disability Inclusion: Empowering Every Student

Fiji National University (FNU) is dedicated to ensuring equal access, full participation, and reasonable accommodations for students striving to achieve their academic objectives, according to Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, Associate Professor Jimaima Lako.

With the theme “Dream It, Weave It, Achieve It,” FNU plans to provide students with detailed information regarding the academic pathways accessible to them. Professor Lako emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting awareness about disabilities within its community, stating, “Our vision is to be a national leader in creating equal opportunities in education and employment for individuals with disabilities.”

Approximately eight special schools are expected to take part in FNU’s open day events across various campuses. Auxiliary aides and services, including sign language interpreters for students with hearing impairments and orientation and mobility instructors for those with vision impairments, will be made available. This assistance is arranged through the center as long as it is incorporated in the students’ Individual Reasonable Adjustment Plan (IRAP).

FNU also offers alternative formats for printed materials, such as Braille and large print, and can support students by enlarging documents, providing Braille, or supplying content in Word or PDF formats for enhanced accessibility. In instances where specific materials cannot be provided, the university collaborates with lecturers to find suitable solutions.

Professor Lako reaffirmed, “We will ensure accessibility to education and employment resources for persons with disabilities.” In addition to these initiatives, the university has invested in assistive technologies, including screen readers like JAWS and Magic Magnification Software. The center features a modern computer lab equipped with specialized software that aids students in completing their programs; this encompasses screen readers for those with vision issues and voice-activated software for students facing physical challenges.

The university provides reasonable adjustments to enable students to fulfill the essential requirements of their programs effectively. These may include converting materials into accessible formats or granting additional time during exams.

This year, FNU anticipates approximately 17,489 students will participate in its open day events, scheduled as follows: Nasinu on October 4-5, 2024, Naduna on October 3-4, 2024, Namaka on October 4, 2024, and Natabua on October 4, 2024.
