FNU’s Open Day: Empowering Students with Disabilities to Achieve Their Dreams

The Fiji National University (FNU) is dedicated to ensuring equal access, full participation, and reasonable accommodations for students pursuing their academic goals, according to Associate Professor Jimaima Lako, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching.

Under the theme “Dream It, Weave It, Achieve It,” FNU aims to provide students with valuable information about available academic pathways. Professor Lako emphasized the university’s commitment to promoting disability awareness within the community and its vision to be a national leader in creating equal opportunities in education and employment for individuals with disabilities.

Approximately eight special schools are expected to take part in the FNU Open Day at various locations. Auxiliary aids and services will be made available, including sign language interpreters for students with hearing impairments and orientation and mobility instructors for those with vision impairments. Assistance will be coordinated through the center, provided it is included in each student’s Individual Reasonable Adjustment Plan (IRAP).

FNU will also offer alternative formats for printed materials, such as Braille and large print, and can assist in enlarging documents or providing content in Word or PDF formats for easier access. If they are unable to fulfill specific requests, the university will collaborate with lecturers to find suitable solutions.

Professor Lako reiterated that FNU is equipped to support students with special needs, ensuring access to educational and employment resources. The university offers assisted technologies, including JAWS Screen Reader and Magic Magnification Software. A state-of-the-art computer lab is available with software specifically designed to aid students in completing their programs, featuring tools like screen readers for those with vision impairments and voice-activated software for individuals with physical disabilities.

“We provide reasonable adjustments to help them meet the inherent requirements of their programs to the best of their ability. These adjustments may include materials in accessible formats or additional time during exams,” Professor Lako noted.

FNU’s Open Day this year is expected to welcome a total of 17,489 students across its various locations. The dates for the Open Day are as follows: Nasinu on October 4-5, 2024; Naduna on October 3-4, 2024; Namaka on October 4, 2024; and Natabua on October 4, 2024.
