Milika Ligabalavu has successfully transitioned from a judicial role to that of a guidance counsellor, a change that has yielded remarkable results. As a lawyer and assistant lecturer at Fiji National University, Ligabalavu has played a pivotal role in shaping a team of law students into outstanding legal advocates.

Under her mentorship, the university achieved a notable victory in a Moot court competition, marking a significant milestone as FNU secured its first win at an inter-tertiary moot court event. The finals featured three distinguished judges from the High Court.

Ligabalavu, who describes her background as a fusion of Fijian and Papua New Guinean heritage, shared that her journey to becoming a lawyer began in 2019 when she was admitted to the Bar in Fiji. Before this, she worked as an Immigration Officer and later joined the Citizens’ Constitutional Forum as a Policy and Research Officer. She became an Assistant Lecturer in Law at FNU in April 2024.

Being the eldest of three siblings with parents who are retired teachers, Ligabalavu is motivated by a desire to assist others and pursue personal growth. She holds a Bachelor of Law and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Fiji and is currently working towards a master’s in law and a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Policy at FNU.

Ligabalavu detailed the challenges faced during the competition, highlighting the stiff competition from teams at the University of Fiji and the University of the South Pacific. Her team included students from various years of the Bachelor of Laws program, each chosen for their advocacy and research talents.

Preparation for the competition was intensive, with team members dedicating countless hours to refine their submissions and advocacy skills. Their commitment was evident as they met during a semester break to collaborate and strategize.

Support from FNU’s Department of Law was crucial throughout the process, with Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti providing encouragement and reminding the team of the university’s core values.

Ligabalavu noted the remarkable growth of the team members throughout the journey. Each student developed their strengths, demonstrating continued teamwork and resilience in overcoming obstacles along the way.

The competition’s final round took place at the High Court of Fiji, and Ligabalavu felt immense pride as her team took the podium. Regardless of the competition’s outcome, she emphasized the significant personal growth achieved by the team members.

Facing initial challenges with limited resources, they evolved into champions of perseverance and collaboration. Their achievement not only brought glory to Fiji National University but also showcased their determination and hard work as they prepare to make their mark in the legal profession.

Ligabalavu’s profound influence at FNU will continue to resonate through the accomplishments of the university’s law graduates, leaving a lasting impact on Fiji’s legal landscape.
