The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at Fiji National University (FNU), Associate Professor Jimaima Lako, emphasized the institution’s dedication to providing equal access, full participation, and necessary accommodations for students aiming to achieve their academic objectives.

Under the theme “Dream It, Weave It, Achieve It,” FNU aims to offer students insight into the various educational pathways available to them. Professor Lako stated, “We ensure that FNU promotes disability awareness within the university community. Our vision is to be a national leader in achieving equal opportunities in education and employment for persons with disabilities.”

The upcoming FNU Open Day will feature about eight special schools, and auxiliary aids will be available, including sign language interpreters for students with hearing impairments and orientation and mobility instructors for those with visual impairments. Assistance will be coordinated by the center if included in the students’ Individual Reasonable Adjustment Plans (IRAP).

Alternatives for printed materials, such as Braille and large print formats, can also be arranged. FNU is prepared to assist in enlarging materials, providing Braille, or offering content in Word or PDF format for better accessibility. In situations where direct support cannot be provided, the university collaborates with lecturers to explore solutions.

Professor Lako highlighted the university’s commitment to offering resources tailored for students with special needs. “We will ensure accessibility to education and employment resources for persons with disabilities,” she asserted.

FNU has invested in assistive technologies, including the JAWS Screen Reader and Magic Magnification Software, and maintains a modern computer lab with specialized software to aid students in their studies. This technology supports students with visual impairments and those with physical disabilities via voice-activated software.

“We provide reasonable adjustments to help them meet the inherent requirements of their programs to the best of their ability,” Professor Lako reiterated, noting that such adjustments could comprise accessible format materials or extra time during examinations.

This year, FNU Open Day is expecting around 17,489 students across its various locations. The event will be held on the following dates: Nasinu on October 4-5, 2024; Naduna on October 3-4, 2024; Namaka on October 4, 2024; and Natabua on October 4, 2024.
