Fiji National University (FNU) has made a strong commitment to combatting violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2026. The institution firmly states that any form of violence or discrimination targeting women is unacceptable within its community.

FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba underscored the university’s focus on creating an inclusive and equitable environment. She remarked, “At FNU, we are committed to creating an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society.”

Professor Nabobo-Baba urged all citizens of Fiji to acknowledge the crucial roles that women play across multiple sectors. “Women are integral to Fiji’s progress and success. They are no longer defined by traditional gender roles but are key contributors to education, business, health, and governance. It is imperative that we support and empower them to thrive,” she stated.

As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, themed “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor delivered a resonant message of unity. She called on every Fijian to engage in meaningful actions against gender-based violence, encouraging them to reflect on their responsibilities in nurturing a culture of respect, to speak out against injustice, and to support survivors.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan serves as a framework for FNU’s initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the university community.

In a hopeful tone, FNU’s proactive commitment reflects the growing recognition of women’s rights as fundamental human rights, and the collective efforts can lead to a lasting change in societal norms, fostering a future without fear for women and girls.

In summary, Fiji National University is taking significant steps to address the issue of violence against women and girls, promoting an inclusive and equitable culture within its community and beyond.
