The Fiji National University is enhancing educational opportunities in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry by introducing three new diploma programs at its Ba, Nadi, and Labasa campuses, set to launch in 2026. These programs aim to provide students with practical, hands-on experiences that include ornamental fish farming, farm tours, and harvesting demonstrations. The intention is to equip students with valuable skills that promote income generation and yield long-term benefits for local communities.
Beginning in Semester 1 of 2026, the university will roll out a Diploma in Aquaculture at both the Ba and Bonunaqwele Nadi campuses, a Diploma in Animal Husbandry at Labasa, and another Diploma in Agriculture at Bonunaqwele Nadi. Dr. Kaliova Ravuiwasa, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (CAFF), emphasized that these new courses underscore FNU’s dedication to sustainable development and enhancing educational accessibility for youth across Fiji.
Furthermore, Dr. Ravinesh Ram, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Fisheries, noted that the aquaculture program is designed to empower rural and coastal communities. It aims to equip individuals with essential skills for sustainable food production and income generation while promoting environmentally responsible practices. The program also aspires to bolster food security, create job opportunities for women and young people, and support Fiji’s tourism sector through aquaculture-related initiatives.
This expansion signifies a positive step forward for both educational development and community upliftment, reflecting FNU’s commitment to fostering sustainable practices in vital sectors. The launch of these programs presents an exciting opportunity for students to engage with their environments and contribute to the economic resilience of their communities.
