FNU Takes Bold Stand Against Violence Toward Women and Girls

Fiji National University (FNU) has firmly reiterated its commitment to combat violence against women and girls with the introduction of its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. Through this initiative, FNU has made it clear that any form of violence or discrimination against women is unacceptable within its community and should not be tolerated elsewhere.

FNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, emphasized the institution’s focus on creating an environment characterized by inclusivity and respect. She asserted, “At FNU, we are dedicated to nurturing a setting where every person is valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls constitutes a violation of human rights that must be eradicated from our society.”

Furthermore, Professor Nabobo-Baba urged all Fijians to acknowledge the significant roles women play across various sectors. “Women are essential to Fiji’s advancement and success; they transcend traditional gender roles and are vital contributors in education, business, health, and governance. It is crucial that we support and empower them to flourish,” she remarked.

As Fiji marks the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, under the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor delivered a powerful message promoting unity in addressing the issue. She called on every Fijian to reflect on their responsibility towards cultivating a culture of respect and safety, to speak out against injustice, and to extend support to survivors of violence. “Together, we can dismantle the cycle of violence and build a future where women and girls can exist with dignity and freedom from fear,” she asserted.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan is designed to steer FNU’s efforts in ensuring gender equality and creating a safe, inclusive space for everyone.

This initiative not only reflects FNU’s dedication to fostering a culture of equality but also inspires hope for a safer and more equitable society for future generations.
