Fiji National University (FNU) has boldly reiterated its commitment to combat violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. This initiative underlines the university’s intolerance towards any form of violence or discrimination directed at women within its community and beyond.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment where every individual is valued and respected. “Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society,” she asserted, reinforcing the university’s mission to prioritize safety and respect.

Additionally, Professor Nabobo-Baba urged all Fijians to acknowledge the significant roles women play across various sectors, asserting that they have moved beyond traditional gender roles to become vital contributors in education, business, health, and governance. Empowering women and supporting their success is seen as crucial to Fiji’s ongoing progress.

As Fiji participates in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, under the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor called for collective action to eradicate violence. She encouraged every Fijian to examine their role in cultivating a culture of respect and safety, urging them to reject injustice and support survivors of violence. Together, she believes, the community can dismantle the cycles of violence and create a future where women and girls can thrive in dignity without fear.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan is instrumental in guiding FNU’s ongoing endeavors to promote gender equality and foster a safe, inclusive environment for all members of the university community.

This initiative is a hopeful sign of progress, reflecting a strong societal commitment to addressing pressing issues surrounding gender-based violence, and striving for a more equitable future for all. The collaborative approach that includes educational institutions, community members, and government highlights the power and potential of collective action in creating lasting change.
