Fiji National University (FNU) has reiterated its strong commitment to combat violence against women and girls through the implementation of its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024-2026. The institution has made it clear that any form of violence or discrimination directed at women will not be tolerated in its community or beyond.

FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba emphasized the university’s mission to cultivate an environment that values, respects, and protects every individual. She stated, “Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society.”

Professor Nabobo-Baba also called for national recognition of women’s vital contributions in various sectors, stating, “Women are integral to Fiji’s progress and success.” She highlighted the necessity of empowering women, who are now moving beyond traditional gender roles to actively participate in education, business, health, and governance.

In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which carries the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor encouraged all Fijians to unite in their efforts to address and eliminate violence against women. She urged citizens to reflect on their roles in promoting a culture of respect and safety and to support survivors of gender-based violence.

The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan will guide FNU in its ongoing initiatives to ensure gender equality and maintain a secure and inclusive environment for all members of the community.

In summary, FNU’s commitment underlines a significant step toward fostering a safe and respectful society where women can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination. This proactive approach not only enhances the university’s environment but also sends a hopeful message to the broader community about the importance of unity in achieving gender equality. Together, as highlighted by Professor Nabobo-Baba, Fiji can work towards a future where dignity and freedom from fear are rights enjoyed by all women and girls.
