Fiji National University (FNU) has reinforced its strong commitment to combating violence against women and girls with the introduction of its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for the years 2024 to 2026.
The university has made it clear that any acts of violence or discrimination against women will not be tolerated, both within its community and in the broader society. FNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, emphasized the institution’s dedication to fostering an environment of inclusivity and equality.
“At FNU, we are dedicated to creating a space where everyone feels valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a severe violation of human rights, and it has no place in our society,” Professor Nabobo-Baba stated.
She highlighted the importance of recognizing women as vital contributors to all sectors of society, stating, “Women are crucial to Fiji’s progress and success. They are no longer confined to traditional gender roles but play significant roles in education, business, health, and governance. Supporting and empowering them is essential for fostering their growth.”
As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, with the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor called on all Fijians to unite in meaningful action to combat violence against women. “I encourage every Fijian to reflect on their role in promoting a culture of respect and safety, challenge injustices, and support survivors. Together, we can end the cycle of violence and create a future where women and girls live with dignity and freedom from fear,” she urged.
FNU’s GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan lays the groundwork for the institution’s ongoing efforts to ensure gender equality and nurture a safe, inclusive environment for all.
This initiative by FNU is a crucial step in the fight against gender-based violence, reflecting a broader commitment within society to create safe and respectful spaces. By promoting gender equality and recognizing the significant roles of women, FNU sets a powerful example for other institutions to follow.
