Fiji National University (FNU) has reinforced its commitment to combatting violence against women and girls through its Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2026. The university has made it clear that any act of violence or discrimination against women will not be tolerated within its campus or the wider community.
Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, the Vice-Chancellor of FNU, emphasized the institution’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment. “At FNU, we are committed to creating an atmosphere where every individual feels valued, respected, and safe. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights and has no place in our society,” she stated.
In her remarks, Professor Nabobo-Baba urged everyone in Fiji to acknowledge the significant contributions made by women across various sectors. “Women are integral to Fiji’s progress and success. They are no longer confined by traditional gender roles; instead, they play vital roles in education, business, health, and governance. It is essential that we support and empower them to thrive,” she added.
As the nation observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with the theme “UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” the Vice-Chancellor extended a message of solidarity. “This theme urges us to unite and take impactful actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Fiji,” she said. She encouraged every citizen to reflect on their responsibilities in promoting a culture of respect and safety, advocate against injustices, and support survivors. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and work towards a future where women and girls can live with dignity, free from fear,” she concluded.
The GEDSI Strategy and Action Plan acts as a roadmap for FNU’s initiatives aimed at ensuring gender equality and nurturing a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals.
