A group of current and former staff from the Fiji National University (FNU) has met with Education Minister Aseri Radrodro to discuss their concerns regarding a senior management figure accused of breaching employment and occupational health and safety standards. Accompanied by FNU Chancellor Semesa Karavaki, the group expressed relief at having the opportunity for direct dialogue with Radrodro.
Chancellor Karavaki stated, “Of course I think the Minister is also happy and he would like to see how we advise him on the way forward from here so that FNU would continue to grow in its move towards development and also be able to continue to perform its mandate and that is to provide human resources for the Government and to support the National Development Plan.” He emphasized the priority of treating FNU staff with dignity and respect.
This meeting follows ongoing allegations of mistreatment by the senior manager, which have been firmly denied by FNU in previous communications. A consultant for FNU, Ropate Valemei, claimed complaints regarding the manager were handled internally and marked as resolved last year.
Despite these denials, staff members have reported significant breaches related to employment standards and health safety protocols. Concerns about favoritism and intimidation have been raised, with claims that some staff were unfairly removed from leadership roles. Important to note is that the situation escalated, leading to the resignation of the implicated senior manager shortly after reports of the allegations surfaced.
While FNU’s internal reviews found no wrongdoing, the decision to engage with Minister Radrodro indicates a desire for transparency and accountability moving forward. It’s expected that the Ministry will announce an agreement reached with FNU, hinting at possible reforms to ensure a healthier working environment.
As these discussions unfold, there is a sense of hope that the actions taken may lead to constructive changes within FNU. This aligns with the increasing focus on ensuring fair treatment and enhanced workplace standards within educational institutions across Fiji. The situation presents an opportunity to foster a more supportive culture and to reinforce the commitment to maintaining high standards of governance in public service.
