Students at the Fiji National University (FNU) are facing a significant challenge, with unpaid fees accumulating to an astonishing $35 million, as revealed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba during a recent consultation in Labasa. A substantial number of these students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, which makes paying their fees particularly difficult.
In a proactive move to alleviate this burden, FNU has established a foundation dedicated to supporting students facing financial difficulties through scholarships and other forms of assistance. On its inaugural day, the foundation successfully raised between $250,000 to $500,000, showcasing the commitment from staff members who contributed a portion of their fortnightly salaries, emphasizing their belief in uplifting the community.
Dr. Isimeli Tagicakiverata, the TVET pro-vice chancellor, explained that despite FNU being a national institution, it faces financial constraints due to decreasing government grants over the last two years. He noted that the university is striving to maximize its resources while continuing to provide quality education across its many campuses.
The initiatives introduced by the foundation align with FNU’s long-term strategy to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue their educational aspirations without financial barriers. The foundation has initiated various programs, such as the Veilomoni Closet and Food Pantry, to support students in need, providing not just financial assistance but also necessities like professional attire for interviews and meals for those experiencing food insecurity.
This commitment to fostering equitable access to education reflects a growing awareness of the role educational institutions play in community development. By enabling students to overcome financial hurdles, FNU is laying the foundation for a more inclusive and educated society. The hopes for improved educational access and support are indeed a promising sign for the future of Fijian youth, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and continued dedication to educational empowerment.
