The annual graduation ceremony of the Fiji National University (FNU) showcased a remarkable trend, as female students constituted the majority of this year’s graduating class. This shift in demographics highlights the growing participation of women in higher education, particularly noted within the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, as well as the College of Humanities, Education and Law.
During her address, FNU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Unaisi Nabobo-Baba celebrated the achievements of the 241 graduates, which included a diverse range from certificate to doctorate levels. She offered her heartfelt congratulations and underscored the significance of this year’s predominantly female cohort, with 147 female graduates making their mark.
Dr. Nabobo-Baba recognized the resilience shown by the graduates. “Students, you are the reason we are here; often, University staff forget that you are the core of our purpose. I am especially proud that a large number of you are women,” she remarked, reinforcing the importance of female representation in education.
Among the graduates was Veronika Barinisavu, who earned her degree in law and reflected on her challenging journey. She expressed deep gratitude towards her family and FNU lecturers for their unwavering support throughout her studies. “It wasn’t easy; there were times I thought I wouldn’t make it, but thanks to the many people who stood by me, I reached this point,” Barinisavu shared.
The graduation event was filled with emotion, as many female attendees took the stage to share their stories of perseverance in overcoming various challenges during their educational paths. This year’s ceremony not only celebrated academic achievements but also highlighted the collective strength and determination of female graduates in pursuing their dreams.
