In a significant move to broaden educational access for students in remote areas, the Fiji National University (FNU) outreach team has successfully completed an application drive across the Kadavu and Lomaiviti Groups. This initiative aims to help students overcome geographical barriers to education.
Semisi Caucau, a teacher at Koro High School, expressed his gratitude towards FNU for their dedication to supporting students despite the challenges posed by their locations. He stated, “Your willingness to assist our students with their applications has made a profound impact, opening doors for them to pursue their aspirations confidently.” Caucau recognized the vital role the national university plays in shaping the future of their students and looked forward to more collaborative efforts.
The outreach campaign included informative sessions at multiple schools, such as Vunisea Secondary School, Richmond High School, and Levuka Public School. FNU representatives engaged directly with Year 12 and Year 13 students, providing insights into various academic programs and aiding them in the application process.
Vijayta Sharma, the acting manager of outreach, highlighted the enthusiasm exhibited by students, particularly at Vunisea. The students showed a keen interest in understanding how FNU’s programs could align with their career aspirations. Sharma noted the palpable excitement among Year 13 students, eager to explore their options for the upcoming academic year.
The initiative not only provided essential academic information but also strengthened the relationship between FNU and the communities it serves, reinforcing the university’s commitment to empowering students on their educational journeys. At Gau Secondary School, Sharma thanked Year 13 students who took time on a Saturday to engage with FNU staff and complete application forms, further demonstrating their commitment to planning for a successful future. The last stop at Levuka Public School was a fitting conclusion to this impactful outreach campaign, where the FNU team connected with students to answer their queries and assist them with their applications.
This outreach initiative underscores the vital role educational institutions play in community development and highlights FNU’s proactive approach in navigating challenges to make education accessible. The positive experiences shared by students and educators alike illustrate the potential for continued collaboration, fostering a brighter future for students in these remote regions.
