FNU Dominates Tertiary Scholarships: A Closer Look at TSLS Funding

Fiji National University (FNU) accounts for 53 percent of all students funded by the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS). Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro reported to Parliament that there are currently 15,666 students receiving TSLS funding in 2024.

Among these, 8,333 students are enrolled at FNU, while 4,280 are attending the University of the South Pacific. The University of Fiji has 902 TSLS recipients, followed by the Sangam Institute of Technology with 319 students, Fulton College with 142 students, and Corpus Christi Teachers College with 100 students.

Minister Radrodro noted that TSLS allocated $56 million to various tertiary education institutions in the 2022-2023 financial year, increasing to $62 million for the 2023-2024 financial year. FNU received $30.7 million from TSLS for the current year, while the University of the South Pacific was awarded $13.1 million, and the University of Fiji received $6.6 million. The Sangam Institute of Nursing received $1.9 million.

Radrodro emphasized that TSLS is committed to enhancing its policies for transparent and efficient management of taxpayer funds dedicated to scholarship and loan programs. In 2023, TSLS funded 13,860 students across various tertiary education institutes, with that number rising to 15,666 in 2024.
