FNU Denies Cover-Up, Signals Governance Reforms After Internal Inquiry

The Fiji National University (FNU) has responded to concerns raised in a recent article by FBC News, clarifying that the allegations against a senior staff member had already been thoroughly investigated under its internal disciplinary procedures. FNU confirmed that the investigation’s findings led to appropriate administrative actions, maintaining that the processes adhered to the principles of natural justice and the university’s established policies.

In its statement, FNU clarified that the staff member in question had been reassigned to a different functional area under a separate contract. This decision, the university emphasized, was made to ensure organizational balance and continuity of essential functions, indicating it should not be interpreted as a promotion.

The university firmly denied any accusations of a “cover-up” or favoritism in handling the matter, stating that all actions were consistent with due process and oversight at multiple governance levels. FNU reiterated its commitment to fostering a professional, respectful, and accountable workplace, urging employees to utilize internal reporting mechanisms for grievances.

Amidst FNU’s clarifications, some current and former staff members reaffirmed their support for the allegations and claim to possess evidence backing their assertions. Former staff member Rusiate Vada expressed determination to persist in their demands for the removal of the implicated senior management individual, indicating that these issues have been ongoing for several years.

This dialog around governance and accountability comes at a pivotal time, especially as Education Minister Aseri Radrodro engaged with FNU leadership to discuss these pressing concerns. The investigations and discussions highlight the ongoing challenges within FNU and the broader education sector in Fiji, underscoring the critical need for transparency and fair treatment within educational institutions.

The university’s dedication to maintaining standards of professionalism may foster a more constructive dialogue moving forward, emphasizing the need for reforms in workplace culture and governance. With hopes for positive developments, the situation represents an opportunity for FNU to reinforce its commitment to integrity and support for all staff members.
