Regulatory hurdles are hindering the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) in its pursuit of establishing overseas operations. CEO Viliame Vodonaivalu shared that the fund is exploring opportunities for expansion in markets such as New Zealand and Australia. However, they are facing strict regulations that complicate the establishment process, treating their initiatives akin to superannuation funds, which come with a complex set of regulatory requirements.
During a public forum at the Labasa Civic Centre, Vodonaivalu highlighted these challenges and reaffirmed FNPF’s determination to push through despite these limitations. Alipate Waqairawai, the general manager for Member Services, provided further insight into the regulatory complexities related to overseas superannuation, noting that current legislation poses significant barriers to the Fund’s international ambitions.
In the face of these challenges, FNPF is innovating through technology to enhance engagement with its overseas members. The launch of the My FNPF app allows Fijians living abroad to easily manage their accounts and perform transactions directly from their mobile devices. Waqairawai emphasized that the app greatly improves convenience, enabling members to maintain their savings and make contributions regardless of their location.
The need for international connections is vital as FNPF aims for sustainable growth and improved returns on investments in an evolving financial environment. Previous articles have indicated that FNPF is actively working to diversify its investment portfolio, which includes significant offshore investments, crucial for its financial sustainability. This combination of navigating regulatory challenges and enhancing member services through technology presents a hopeful outlook for FNPF, fostering a strong sense of community among Fijians at home and abroad.
Overall, while regulatory challenges remain, FNPF’s focus on innovation and member engagement bodes well for achieving financial stability and sustainability in the future.
