The Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) has updated its medical withdrawal policy regarding childbirth, emphasizing that funds are only available in cases of severe, life-threatening emergencies and not for routine maternity care. The fund clarified that the medical pre-withdrawal benefit applies uniformly to all members, with assessments focused on the urgency of the medical condition supported by appropriate specialist documentation.
FNPF highlighted that while caesarean sections may sometimes be clinically urgent, they do not automatically qualify for financial assistance unless confirmed by healthcare professionals to be part of a life-threatening emergency. This includes stipulations that only emergency childbirth cases, where medical reports substantiate the severity, may be eligible for payouts. Routine maternity costs, including elective caesarean sections, fall outside the coverage parameters. Approved payments will directly be made to medical facilities to enhance transparency and accountability.
Addressing concerns raised in a recent article by The Fiji Times titled “Father slams FNPF policy,” FNPF stated that the documentation submitted in the highlighted case did not meet their required threshold. The fund noted that the advice given to the member was based on the lack of sufficient evidence demonstrating a severe condition. They also pointed out that the inquiry did not include any details indicating an emergency, indicating a possible misinterpretation of their policy.
Looking forward, FNPF expressed its commitment to working with hospitals to enhance the quality of medical reports submitted for urgent claims. They mentioned that hospitals are responsible for providing detailed specialist reports to support these claims. FNPF remains dedicated to assisting members during legitimate medical emergencies while prioritizing the protection of their long-term retirement savings. Members are encouraged to submit comprehensive medical documentation to ensure accurate evaluation of their requests.
