The Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) has issued an important clarification regarding the access to retirement savings for members facing terminal or severe medical conditions. During a recent Member Forum, concerns were raised about the eligibility of individuals diagnosed with terminal illnesses to withdraw funds before reaching the age of 55 under the Fund’s medical incapacitation withdrawal provisions.
Farnaz Queet, the Senior Manager of Member Services, explained that members unable to continue their employment due to serious health issues may indeed apply for a medical withdrawal grant. She stated, “We have a medical incapacitation withdrawal grant with its own qualifying conditions. This grant permits withdrawals for medical reasons before the age of 55. If you are incapacitated, disabled, or have a medically certified reason that prevents you from working, you can access your full entitlement.”
Queet emphasized that all applications for this withdrawal are subject to strict qualifying conditions. A panel of doctors thoroughly assesses these applications, ensuring that they meet the necessary criteria. Members are encouraged to submit comprehensive medical documentation, including referrals and certificates from their doctors, to support their applications. Queet advised that detailed and definitive medical reports are crucial, as insufficient documentation can delay the evaluation process.
The FNPF’s medical board comprises qualified doctors affiliated with the public health system, which helps in the verification and assessment of medical reports according to established standards. This initiative underscores the Fund’s commitment to supporting its members during challenging times by ensuring that those in need can access their funds in accordance with medical guidelines.
