Flying High: Losana Lutu Joins Fiji Bulikula for Pacific Bowl Championship

Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele stated, “We traveled to Australia to scout players and selected eight individuals.” He emphasized the inclusion of Lutu, a talented halfback currently playing for the Wests Tigers.

Originally from Suva and a Campbelltown Junior, Lutu has rapidly advanced through the Wests Tigers development system. Known for her strong running capabilities, Lutu had a standout season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing a title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

As they prepare for a crucial clash against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele will evaluate the best combination of players.

“We have been following the women’s games in the local competition,” said Rabele, who previously guided the Fiji Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He noted that there are several players being considered for the squad of 35, but they must receive approval from the NRL regarding player eligibility.

Rabele acknowledged the need for improvements within the local competition and highlighted the significance of the upcoming qualifier. “This is a very important game for us,” he remarked.

With the goal of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, Rabele is mindful of assembling the strongest team for the qualifiers. He has included several secondary school players from the Lami Steelers in his plans, aiming for half of the final 35-member squad to comprise local players.

Reflecting on the previous year, Rabele expressed disappointment that the Fiji Bulikula was not part of the World Cup. “This year presents an opportunity for us to better identify our players. The team we will assemble will be a strong blend of talent,” he concluded.
