The Flying Fijians, under head coach Mick Byrne, have announced a 32-member squad for their upcoming Test matches against Australia and Scotland. Notably, the team lacks a specialized full-back, prompting the coach to highlight the versatility of several utility players capable of stepping into that role.

Byrne mentioned players such as Vilimoni Botitu, who impressed in the full-back position against the All Blacks last year, and Sireli Maqala, who excels at center but has experience at full-back. Other potential players for the No.15 jersey include Salesi Rayasi, Selestino Ravutaumada, Caleb Muntz, and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula.

Byrne expressed confidence in the flexibility of his squad but acknowledged the challenge of optimizing backfield coverage in modern rugby. “Understanding the back-field coverage… is a really big challenge,” he stated. The team aims to develop effective strategies for their backline to create an impactful performance during the matches.

Tevita Ikanivere has been appointed as the team captain, taking over from Waisea Nayacalevu. Byrne praised Ikanivere’s leadership potential, indicating he is a young leader ready to fill significant shoes.

While the coaching staff is aware of public expectations, Byrne reassured that he and the players are focused on performing well. “There is always pressure; this is the number one sport in the country. But I have faith in the players I have chosen,” he remarked, showcasing a trust in his team’s abilities to inspire the next generation of Fijian rugby players.

The Flying Fijians are set to face Australia on July 6 and Scotland on July 12 in Suva, with hopes high that this combination of experienced and adaptable players will shine on the field. The focus remains on developing a cohesive unit that learns and grows through their international journey, aiming to leave a positive legacy for aspiring rugby players in Fiji.

This squad selection reflects a commitment to maintaining strong performance standards while also nurturing the talents of the future. The upcoming matches represent a significant opportunity for the Flying Fijians to build on their rugby legacy.
