Flying Fijians Under Review: What’s Next for the Team?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to present a report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week regarding the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu shared this update with SUNsports, noting that it is standard practice for the board to assess all aspects of performance at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from Australia and will discuss the team’s recent tour. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ recent performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the outcome against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in world ranking are encouraging developments to build upon.

Nayacalevu expressed concerns over limited access to players, especially since the Barbarians match in Twickenham occurred during the Super Rugby season and outside the World Rugby access window. He highlighted these as two significant issues for the team.

He emphasized that all staff members, including Byrne, have key performance indicators (KPIs) established in their job descriptions. Nayacalevu stated that any directives would come after the review process following Coach Mick’s return to the island. Additionally, he confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has resigned following the recent tour.
