Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is scheduled to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to assess the team’s recent performances. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu informed SUNsports that it is standard practice for the board to review all aspects of performance at the conclusion of each campaign.
Nayacalevu noted that Byrne has returned from Australia and will discuss the recent tour during this week’s meeting. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the team’s recent results, Nayacalevu acknowledged that the loss against the All Blacks was disappointing. However, he pointed out the significance of the win against Georgia and the improvement in their world ranking as positive aspects to build on moving forward.
Addressing areas of concern, Nayacalevu highlighted the limited access to players, especially since the Barbarians match in Twickenham occurred during the Super Rugby season and outside the designated World Rugby access window. He emphasized that these issues are concerning.
Furthermore, he indicated that all staff members, including Byrne, have specific performance indicators outlined in their job descriptions. Any directives will emerge after the review process, once Coach Mick is back on the island. Nayacalevu also confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
