Flying Fijians Under Review: What’s Next for Coach Mick Byrne?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to meet with the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to discuss the team’s recent performances. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that this meeting is part of the standard procedure for the board to evaluate all performance aspects after each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from Australia and will provide an update on the recent tour. When asked about the board’s sentiments regarding the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the match against the All Blacks did not yield the desired outcome, the victory against Georgia and the subsequent improvement in world rankings are positive aspects to focus on moving forward.

Nayacalevu expressed concerns regarding limited access to players, particularly since the Barbarians match at Twickenham coincided with the Super Rugby season and fell outside the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that these are critical issues to address.

All coaching staff members, including Byrne, have performance indicators outlined in their job descriptions. Nayacalevu noted that any directives would be issued following the review once Coach Mick is back on the island. Additionally, he confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation after the recent tour.
