Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to assess the team’s recent performances. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that this is a standard procedure where the board evaluates all performance aspects at the conclusion of each campaign.
Byrne has recently returned from Australia and will discuss the outcomes of the tour with the board. When questioned about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the loss against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in world ranking provide a foundation for future development.
The CEO highlighted concerns regarding the restricted access to players, as the Barbarians match at Twickenham took place during the Super Rugby season and was outside the World Rugby access window.
He emphasized that all staff, including Byrne, have established key performance indicators (KPIs) as part of their job descriptions. Any directives will be communicated following the review process once Coach Mick returns to Fiji. Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Eleina McDonald, the manager of the Flying Fijians during the recent tour, has submitted her resignation.
