Flying Fijians’ head coach Mick Byrne is exploring different combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) tournament. In an interview, Byrne highlighted the seamless integration of forwards and backs in the team.
“It’s a small squad, and 28 isn’t a large number,” he remarked. “We have our backs covered, and with one or two additional backs available, everyone has the opportunity to play in various combinations.”
Byrne acknowledged that while the exact formations for later stages of the competition remain uncertain, the current phase is a work in progress. “We’re navigating through this, ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate. It’s not like we have several players sidelined; all players are getting involved in this compact squad.”
Looking ahead to the challenge against Tonga next Friday, Byrne expressed his understanding of the pressure involved. “Playing against teams in their home countries, such as Fiji in Fiji, Samoa in Samoa, or Tonga in Tonga, is always a challenge. We’re aware of the passionate support for home teams from fans in the Pacific Islands.”
He noted, “It’s going to be a significant pressure for us, and we must remain focused on our objectives for the match, allowing outside distractions to fade away.”
In other news, Tonga will be led by powerful prop Ben Tameifuna in their PNC opener against Samoa in Apia, which is crucial for both teams.
