The FIJI Water Flying Fijians demonstrated impressive performance and resilience with a 29-14 victory against Scotland in their recent Test match at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This win is regarded as a significant achievement for the team, especially following their narrow 18-21 loss to the Australian Wallabies just two weeks earlier. Koli Sewabu, the acting chief executive of Fiji Rugby, emphasized the necessity of consistency moving forward as the team prepares for forthcoming Test matches.
Sewabu acknowledged the team’s mixed results but remained optimistic about their potential, particularly after they successfully transitioned to tier one status in international rugby. The squad’s formation for the Tests was notably challenged by the limited preparation time, as many players based in Europe joined the team shortly before the match. Despite this, the Flying Fijians managed to foster a strong team culture, which has become increasingly evident to their supporters.
Captain Tevita Ikanivere celebrated the victory, attributing part of their success to the enthusiastic support from the crowd of around 10,000 attendees, highlighting the vital role of home advantage. Looking forward, Sewabu noted that the upcoming period will provide the players with a necessary break, allowing them to recharge ahead of future competitions, including the Nations Cup and the Rugby World Cup in 2027.
The recent win against Scotland not only boosted the team’s morale but also serves as a foundation for their preparation for the upcoming matches, with a positive atmosphere surrounding the squad. The Flying Fijians embody a blend of experienced players and rising talent, fostering hope for an exciting trajectory for Fijian rugby on the international stage. Fans are encouraged to maintain their support as the team builds on this momentum.
