Flying Fijians Soar to Victory: Coach Hails Young Squad’s Performance

Fiji Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne praised his team’s performance following their 42-16 victory over Samoa in the opening match of the 2024 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, which took place in Suva last Friday. Byrne highlighted the impressive effort of the young squad, bolstered by experienced veterans, as they rose to the occasion.

“They did well straight off the bat,” Byrne commented, noting that the team only had three training sessions leading up to the match. He was particularly impressed with the discipline displayed in the first half, acknowledging the coaching staff’s effective leadership.

Byrne also recognized the commendable performances of the debutants, emphasizing their ability to perform well in front of a home crowd. “Deep down, you know they’re going to be nervous, and they will try and play well. I thought they did well when they got their hands on the ball,” he said.

With the Flying Fijians taking a bye week in Pool A of the Pacific Nations Cup, focus now shifts to the upcoming match between Tonga and Samoa. The team will utilize this time to prepare for their next significant challenge against Tonga.
