Flying Fijians Soar to PNC Final: Coach and Player Spotlight

Fiji Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne expressed his pride in the team’s overall performance and resilience following their semi-final victory against the USA, which secured their spot in the Pacific Nations Cup final.

Although the match started off poorly for Fiji, Byrne praised the team for their patience and their ability to improve as the game progressed. He recognized the physicality and pressure exerted by the USA but emphasized the Flying Fijians’ determination to persevere and ultimately emerge victorious.

“I thought we were poor at the start, but all credit to the USA; they came out to play and were physical. They put us under a lot of pressure and did not allow us to play,” Byrne stated. “I know for a fact that we stayed in the game, stayed patient, and continued to develop our play, even though we gave away some easy ball at times.”

Elia Canakaivata, the Flying Fijians’ number eight, was awarded player of the match for his exceptional performance, scoring two vital tries that aided in the team’s success. Canakaivata attributed the victory to the support from the fans in attendance and expressed his gratitude to the Lord Almighty for His blessings and protection, stating that his accomplishments would not have been possible without divine support.

The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are set to face the host nation, Japan, in the Pacific Nations Cup final, scheduled for Saturday at 10:05 PM. Fiji enters the final as the defending champion of the tournament.
