Fiji Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne expressed pride in his team’s resilience and overall performance following their semi-final victory against the USA, which secured their spot in the Pacific Nations Cup final.
Byrne praised the team for remaining patient and improving their game despite a rough start. He recognized the physicality and pressure exerted by the USA but emphasized the Flying Fijians’ ability to stay composed and ultimately claim victory.
“I thought we were poor at the start, but all credit to the USA; they came out to play and were physical, putting us under a lot of pressure and not allowing us to play,” Byrne remarked. “I know for a fact that we stayed in the game, stayed patient, and continued to grow our game, although we gave away a bit of easy ball, which is not ideal.”
Elia Canakaivata, the number eight for the Flying Fijians, was named player of the match for his remarkable performance, scoring two pivotal tries that helped the team secure the win. Canakaivata expressed appreciation for the fans’ support and acknowledged their vital role in their success. He also thanked the Lord Almighty for his blessings and protection, stating that his achievements would not have been possible without divine support.
