Fiji Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has expressed great satisfaction with his team’s performance following their 42-16 victory over Samoa in the opening match of the 2024 Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup, which took place in Suva last Friday.
Byrne praised the young squad, highlighting the support from experienced veterans, and their ability to rise to the occasion.
“They did well straight off the bat,” Byrne commented. “Given they had only three training sessions that week, their discipline, particularly in the first half, was commendable. The coaches also played a significant role in guiding them.”
He also acknowledged the debut players, noting their impressive performances in front of the home crowd.
“Deep down, you know they’re going to be nervous, but they strive to play well. I thought they excelled when they had the ball,” he noted.
With the Flying Fijians enjoying a bye week in Pool A of the Pacific Nations Cup, all eyes will be on the upcoming match between Tonga and Samoa this weekend. The team plans to utilize this time to prepare for their next match against Tonga.
