Flying Fijians Set for Exciting Debuts in PNC Opener Against Samoa!

Fiji’s Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has announced a squad featuring four potential debutants for their match against Manu Samoa in the Asahi Dry Pacific Nations Cup opener at HFC Bank Stadium today.

Waratahs utility back and former rugby league player Vuate Karawalevu will start at fullback, while Fijian Drua winger Epeli Momo takes his place on the left wing. Apisalome Vota and Moses Sorovi are also set to potentially make their first appearances, coming off the bench.

Tevita Ikanivere will lead the team as captain from the hooker’s position, supported by props Haereiti Hetet and Samuela Tawake. The locks will be Isoa Nasilasila and Temo Mayanavanua, with Meli Derenalagi and Kitione Salawa serving as flankers. Elia Canakaivata is positioned at number eight.

The half-back pairing consists of Frank Lomani and Caleb Muntz, while Inia Tabuavou and Iosefo Masi will play in the centers. Selestino Ravutaumada joins Momo on the wing, completing the back three alongside Karawalevu.

Captain Ikanivere emphasizes the importance of this match, being the only Test match to be held in Fiji this year. “With only one Test match scheduled in Fiji this year, the pressure is on for the boys to deliver a standout performance,” he stated, expressing his appreciation for being appointed captain by coach Byrne.

“I am excited about leading the team in a home Test and thankful for the trust placed in me by coach Mick Byrne. I am ready for the challenge of guiding the team in this match,” Ikanivere said. He also expressed confidence in his younger teammates, noting their collective goal of achieving a win.

He extended an invitation to fans to support the team as they aim for victory. The match against Samoa is set to kick off at 6 pm today.
