The FIJI Water Flying Fijians have won the admiration of fans both locally and internationally with their impressive performances in the Autumn Nations Series. Although they faced a challenging start with a 17-57 defeat to Scotland, the team rebounded strongly by defeating Wales 24-19 in Cardiff. They continued their momentum with a remarkable second-half comeback to secure a 33-19 victory over Spain last weekend.
Sailosi Naiteqe Sr, a former national selector and player, has praised the contribution of senior players based in Europe, highlighting their positive influence on the team during their recent matches against Wales and Spain. As the Flying Fijians prepare for their final game against Ireland, they welcome Stade Francais winger Peniasi Dakuwaqa into their camp, further boosting their lineup for this crucial encounter.
Naiteqe emphasized the importance of these experienced players, stating, “We really appreciate how the Europe-based senior players have motivated the team.” He noted that Fiji has now established itself as a formidable opponent for other major tier-one nations. “What we are seeing now is a different Flying Fijians team; they have that do-or-die fighting spirit, and the true Fijian rugby warrior spirit is back,” he asserted.
He also expressed gratitude towards the coaching staff and team management for their dedication and hard work in guiding the team. The exciting clash against Ireland is set to kick off at 3:10 AM at Aviva Stadium this Sunday.
This recent resurgence of the Flying Fijians comes as a hopeful sign for Fijian rugby, reflecting a united team that can compete on the world stage. It serves as an inspiration for young players and fans alike, as the team demonstrates the strength and resilience indicative of Fijian rugby heritage.
