FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne believes the upcoming Test against Georgia will heavily focus on the forwards. Understanding the physicality of their opponent, Byrne emphasized that collisions and managing the breakdown will be crucial areas where they will be tested the most.
Byrne has selected a formidable forward pack, including Eroni Mawi, Tevita Ikanivere, Mesake Doge, Isoa Nasilasila, Temo Mayanavanua, Lekima Tagitagivalu, Kitione Salawa, and Viliame Mata. Additionally, the bench features a six-to-two split with forward replacements Zuriel Togiatama, Hereiti Hetet, Peni Ravai, Albert Tuisue, Ratu Meli Derenalagi, and Elia Canakaivata.
“I think it’s going to be our collisions. Georgia, with the excitement and physicality they bring, will be hitting those rucks hard and carrying hard,” Byrne said. “We all have to be really mindful around the breakdown, and I think that’s where the battle this week will be most physical.”
Byrne also highlighted the importance of their defensive game. “We need to ensure we get good double tackles to stop their field progression, but also when we have the ball, they will be physical in their approach to us. While we understand the forward pack battle, it’s going to be a battle right across the field, so our backs will need to step up around the breakdown as well,” he added.
Fiji faces Georgia at 4 am at the Adjarabet Arena. The two teams last clashed at the Rugby World Cup in France last year, with Fiji securing a narrow 17-12 victory in a tightly contested match.
