Flying Fijians One Step Closer to Pacific Nations Cup Glory

The Flying Fijians are just one match away from retaining the Pacific Nations Cup title after a hard-fought victory over the USA, winning 22-3 in the semi-final held in Tokyo, Japan. The team, coached by Mick Byrne, will face the winner of the Japan-Samoa semi-final in the final set to take place in Osaka, Japan.

Byrne emphasized that the job is not finished yet, stating they will review their mistakes and prepare for the final. Flying Fijians player Caleb Muntz, who stepped up as captain after his teammate Tevita Ikanivere received a yellow card, acknowledged the toughness of the match but commended the team’s performance.

The match had its challenges, with handling errors leading to opportunities for the USA; however, Fiji’s robust defense and dominance in scrums proved crucial. Coach Byrne praised the team’s efforts, particularly highlighting Elia Canakaivata’s performance.

In other news, Tonga concluded their campaign on a high note by extending their winning streak against Canada to five matches, securing a 30-17 victory in the fifth-place play-off. After a slow start, Tonga, led by player-of-the-match Patrick Pellegrini, showcased their attacking prowess with two early tries. Despite pressure from Canada in the second half, Tonga’s defense held firm, allowing them to achieve the win. Captain Ben Tameifuna noted that this victory is a stepping stone for Tonga as they set their sights on the upcoming World Cup in Australia.
