Pita Gus Sowakula, the former All Blacks number 8, has shown a strong interest in joining the Fiji Water Flying Fijians, as confirmed by head coach Mick Byrne. Recently, Byrne traveled to Europe to meet with players, including Sowakula, who currently plays for Clermont, and his teammate Peceli Yato.

Sowakula is set to become eligible for Fiji after completing a three-year stand down period, which ends on July 9. His last appearance for New Zealand was during a match against Ireland in 2022. During his discussions in France, Byrne noted, “He’s very keen. He’s put his hand up to be part of the selection pool, which is pleasing.” While there are no guarantees of selection, Byrne emphasized that current performance will guide their choices, rather than past achievements.

Byrne’s European trip also included talks with veteran players such as Waisea Nayacalevu, Sam Matavesi, and Semi Radradra, allowing him to familiarize himself with their training environments and outline the schedule for the year ahead. He is evaluating around 80 players for potential selection in upcoming international tests scheduled for July and November. This approach suggests a strategy that combines both seasoned players and emerging talent, aimed at enhancing Fiji’s competitiveness on the international stage.

Furthermore, Byrne expressed optimism, highlighting the expected participation of players from the Northern Hemisphere. He stated, “At this stage, an open mind to the mix of the squad… should help us to pick a really good squad for the July window.”

The possibility of incorporating experienced players like Sowakula aligns with a growing trend in rugby, where athletes choose to represent their heritage in light of changing eligibility rules. This trend not only aims to bolster the capabilities of the Flying Fijians but also holds promise for a more vibrant future in international rugby as they prepare for a series of crucial matches. The potential integration of experienced players into the squad brings hope and excitement for fans and supporters alike.
