Some members of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians squad have gathered in Nadi as they prepare for their upcoming Test match against the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle, Australia. The team plans to leave for Australia today, with their first training session scheduled for Saturday.
Captain Tevita Ikanivere expressed optimism despite the limited preparation time, stating that the squad comprises many experienced players who have recently finished their club commitments. He believes that the team can quickly come together and familiarize themselves with their game plan ahead of next Sunday’s match.
Head coach Mick Byrne has noted that overseas-based players are expected to join the squad just three days before the Test, which does not concern Ikanivere. “I know all the boys coming in are professionals; they have taken care of their bodies, so we just have to learn our roles well in the next couple of days,” Ikanivere remarked.
However, the Flying Fijians will have to adjust to the absence of prop Luke Tagi, who is sidelined due to an injury sustained in a recent Top14 match for Bayonne. His place on the squad has been taken by Fijian Drua prop Samuela Tawake.
The Flying Fijians’ two-match series continues shortly after the Australia match, as they are set to host Scotland on July 12 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The team’s preparation showcases their commitment to building upon past performances and demonstrating their resilience on the international rugby stage.
With the mixture of home-based and overseas players, fans are hopeful that the Flying Fijians will deliver strong performances, showing both their traditional flair and strategic prowess. This upcoming series will not only be an opportunity for the players to shine individually but also to foster a sense of national pride and excitement in Fijian rugby.
