Flying Fijians Gear Up for PNC Showdown Against Samoa

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has announced his squad of 23 players for the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) opener against Samoa, taking place today at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Byrne expressed confidence in the team’s selection, stating, “This is the best combination we can select from the players available in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.” He noted that the team has shown impressive performance during training, despite a couple of injury concerns that need monitoring.

The head coach mentioned feeling a moderate level of pressure to secure a victory against Samoa, emphasizing that it’s a “healthy pressure” which is part of the game. “There’s always a little bit of nerve for the first home game,” he added, underscoring that the focus is on ensuring the team is prepared.

Byrne is particularly excited about the Fijian Drua pair of center Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada, who are expected to shine following their involvement in the Olympic Games sevens program. He also highlighted new partnerships in the game, with Inia Tabuavou joining Masi and fully fit Caleb Muntz back in action. Additionally, players Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota are set to make significant contributions.

Anticipating a challenging encounter, Byrne acknowledged the strength of Samoa’s forward pack, stating, “We know they are going to come hard, and our players thrive on physicality. The battle of the islands often centers on the strength of the forward packs.” He also mentioned the need to prepare defensively against Samoa’s backline, aiming to counter their intense offensive plays.

Byrne concluded that the upcoming match promises to be a fierce contest, focusing on a robust physical battle upfront.
