Defence and discipline are primary concerns for the Flying Fijians as they prepare for their opening match against Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This was emphasized by the team captain, Tevita Ikanivere, during a press conference.
The 24-year-old hooker stressed the importance of maintaining focus throughout the game, stating, “There is a saying that goes only good enough if we do the work.” Ikanivere also encouraged rugby fans to come out and support the revamped Flying Fijians team.
Expressing his gratitude for being chosen as captain, he added, “I’m up for the challenge and I thank God for picking me to do his work on earth.” Ikanivere anticipates a tough match against Samoa but is optimistic due to the leadership within the young team. He remarked, “We are a young team but there are lots of leaders in this team, which makes my work easier on and off the field because everyone takes care of themselves.”
Following two rigorous training sessions, the Flying Fijians are aiming to secure a victory in their first Pacific Nations Cup match, which kicks off at 6 PM.
