Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has announced his strong lineup for today’s Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) opener against Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Byrne emphasized that this selection represents the best combination of players from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
The team has shown impressive performances in training, although they are monitoring a few injuries. Byrne acknowledged the pressure to deliver a successful outcome against Samoa, stating, “It’s healthy pressure as that’s how you survive, and there’s always a little bit of nerve in the first home game.” He stressed that the focus should be on ensuring the team is adequately prepared.
Byrne expressed excitement about the Fijian Drua duo of center Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada following their Olympic Games sevens involvement, as well as new combinations in the team including Inia Tabuavou in the center alongside Masi, with Caleb Muntz returning fully fit. He also mentioned players Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota are ready to make an impact.
The coach anticipates a significant challenge from a robust Samoan forward pack, noting, “We know they are going to come hard,” and highlighted the usual emphasis on strong forward play in this island rivalry. He also remains vigilant about Samoan backline threats, emphasizing the need for solid defensive preparations against their aggressive playing style, promising an intense competition ahead.
