Flying Fijians Gear Up for Epic Clash Against Samoa in PNC Opener

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has announced a robust lineup of 23 players for the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) opener against Samoa, taking place today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Byrne emphasized that this selection represents the best combination available, integrating players from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. He mentioned the team’s strong performance in training, despite dealing with a few injuries that require monitoring.

Byrne acknowledged feeling a moderate level of pressure to secure a victory against Samoa, but described it as healthy, particularly with it being the first home game. He stated, “It’s not about me or my nerves, but it’s crucial to ensure the team is prepared.”

The coach is particularly excited about the contributions from the Fijian Drua players, center Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada, now that they have completed their Olympic sevens commitments. Byrne also highlighted new combinations forming in the team, including Inia Tabuavou in the center alongside Masi, and the return of a fully fit Caleb Muntz. Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota are also expected to make impactful plays.

Expecting a tough contest, Byrne noted that the Samoan forward pack is strong and capable, stating, “We know they are going to come hard and our players thrive on physicality in the forward pack. The battle of the islands typically hinges on these strong forward clashes.”

Byrne also expressed concern regarding the Samoan backline, stressing the need for their team to be prepared to defend against aggressive plays and to trust in their abilities for a challenging yet exciting match ahead.
